Overview
Founded 17 years ago, the Asian Pacific Environmental Network (APEN) helps low-income immigrant Asian communities work towards healthier communities. Transportation and land use in California needs to become more sustainable to meet greenhouse gas reduction goals since the transportation sector is responsible for almost 40 percent of the state’s greenhouse gas emissions. Creating the regional plans (Sustainable Communities Strategies) now mandated by law offers a significant opportunity to change the current development trends and impact global warming. APEN will work as part of the Great Communities Collaborative (GCC) coalition to bring its members from Richmond and Oakland in the process. This is vital to demonstrating public support for more environmentally sound decisions. This will advance the Hewlett Foundation's goals of improve transport and open space conditions in underserved Bay Area communities.
