Overview
For the past thirteen years, the Wallace Alexander Gerbode and Hewlett foundations have partnered to make grants to Bay Area arts organizations to commission new works by gifted individual playwrights, composers, choreographers, and multimedia artists. This highly competitive and nationally respected grant program is unusual among such awards due to the large size of the grants (up to $50,000) and their changes in theme as artistic trends shift. With this renewal, the commissioning program would continue to support artists at critical junctures in their careers, enable nonprofit local arts organizations to develop and premiere substantial new works, and enrich Bay Area audiences by giving them first access to ambitious, original creations.

for the Special Awards in the Arts program
Since 2000, the Wallace Alexander Gerbode and Hewlett foundations have partnered to make grants to Bay Area arts organizations to commission new works of performing arts by gifted individual playwrights, composers, choreographers, and multimedia artists. The resulting new works have their world premieres in the San Francisco Bay Area, enriching Bay Area audiences. A renewal grant to Gerbode will support the Special Awards in the Arts program, making grants to commission six new works in one discipline per year. The next 3-year grant period will focus on Dance, Theater and Music respectively, striving to support a broad array of work reflective of the cultural and aesthetic diversity of the region.
