StoryCorps is a nonpartisan organization that has a mission to preserve and share humanity’s stories to build connections between people and create a more just and compassionate world. Its powerful stories illuminate our shared humanity, pass wisdom from one generation to the next, and leave a legacy for the future. This grant supports the launch of StoryCorps’ One Small Step in Washington, D.C., initiative. StoryCorps will invite members of Congress and their staffs to participate in this project and pair members from opposing parties to have a facilitated, recorded conversation about their lives — not politics. The goals of this project are to illuminate the threat of toxic polarization in our nation’s capital, and foster cross-partisan connection and conversation among our elected representatives.

Founded in 2003, StoryCorps is an American nonprofit organization whose mission is to record, preserve, and share the stories of Americans from all backgrounds and beliefs. This grant will support the One Small Step 2.0 program, a three-year program designed to spark a movement to counter contempt and dehumanization with acts of listening and engagement. The program aims to convince the country of its patriotic duty to see the humanity in people with whom we disagree.
