Grants to this Grantee
for implementing a Good Schools Toolkit to improve the classroom environment in Ugandan schools
The threat of violence in the classroom is one of the many obstacles that prevents Ugandan children from learning. This grant would support Raising Voices to expand its work with schools on developing safer classroom environments in which corporal punishment is banned, teachers elicit more participation from students, and children are given freedom to think critically and creatively as a result. Raising Voices would strengthen its "good schools" approach in the Luwero district by engaging with more schools, facilitating community engagement, and running a district-wide "best teacher" competition to promote classroom changes that improve student achievement.

One of the many obstacles that prevents Ugandan children from learning at school is the threat of violence in the classroom. This grant would support Raising Voices to work with schools on developing safer classroom environments in which corporal punishment is banned, teachers elicit more participation from students, and children are given freedom to think critically and creatively as a result. This grant is expected to show how classroom transformations such as these influence student achievement. Raising Voices’ "good schools" approach would be implemented in at least 50 schools in Uganda and evaluated to look at the model’s impact on learning. The evaluation will also provide evidence of how such an approach could be implemented across the country.
