Overview
Public Counsel (Los Angeles, CA) – Project; New; $190,000 over 2 years; 17% of project budget
For litigation to protect California students’ rights to equal educational opportunity
This grant would support legal advocacy work in California to protect its students’ rights to equal educational opportunity. Over the past year, Public Counsel led a successful lawsuit against Los Angeles Unified School District for implementing teacher layoffs based on seniority, which disproportionately impacted the teaching corps at three middle schools that are low performing and serve largely minority student populations. Our funding would help Public Counsel complete its policy work in that district and at the state level to prevent teacher layoffs that disproportionately affect schools serving the neediest students across the state.
