Overview
The Western Energy Project, a project of the New Venture Fund, was created in 2009 to protect fragile public lands in the West threatened by fossil energy leasing and development. The goals of the Project are to ensure that ecologically important lands are not leased to fossil energy developers, to secure adoption of a set of best management practices that will protect wildlife and water resources where energy leasing occurs, and to keep oil shale lands from being leased for commercial development. This grant would also support a robust communications and outreach effort that defends oil and gas reforms adopted by the Department of the Interior in 2010, which protect the most sensitive western landscapes from being leased.
