Grants to this Grantee
for the National Forum on Oral Trials and Justice Reform in Mexico
Founded in 1994, Institución RENACE is a non-profit, civil society organization based in Monterrey, Nuevo León, that focuses on justice reform in Mexico. For years, RENACE has advocated for broad structural reform of Mexico’s criminal justice system, advocating for transparency and due process via "oral trials" and against the costly, inefficient, and unjust Mexican practice of pre-trial detention that prevails in the country. The organization was a key partner supporting the production and wide public exhibit of the documentary Presumed Guilty, and due to that, it is poised to lever the unprecedented attention generated by the film to reinvigorate and focus the public debate about key aspects of Mexico's 2007 justice reform. This project grant will support RENACE's collaboration with the National Network for Oral Trials (The Red) in Mexico to convene national and international rule of law experts in a public forum to highlight opportunities and practical solutions to implement the above mentioned reform. The forum will happen in early May 2011, therefore the time-sensitive nature of this grant recommendation.
