Grants to this Grantee
for scaling and evaluating the Vital Signs program
We propose renewing a grant to the Gulf of Maine Research Institute for a science education program built upon Maine’s infrastructure of 32,000 laptop computers for seventh- and eighth-grade students and teachers. The Vital Signs program links classes with scientists to collect and analyze data needed to monitor the state’s freshwater and coastal ecosystems for invasive species. It also develops innovative assessments of deeper learning.
for scaling and evaluating the Vital Signs Program
We propose a grant to Gulf of Maine Research Institute (GMRI) for ongoing support for Vital Signs, an OER-based, science education program throughout Maine. Vital Signs builds upon the existing infrastructure of 32,000 laptop computers provided to the state's seventh- and eighth-grade students and teachers. It links classes with professional and citizen scientists in the rigorous collection and analysis of environmental data needed to monitor Maine's freshwater and coastal ecosystems for invasive species. GMRI, a highly respected, nonprofit marine science center, has the intellectual capacity and vision to be a strong demonstration site for the Hewlett Foundation's OER work. The Institute plans to expand the program statewide, evaluate its impact on deeper learning, and seek a partner that can replicate the value of Vital Signs beyond Maine's borders.
