Overview
A project grant is recommended for the 50th anniversary concert of Sacred Music by Duke Ellington presented by the Ghiberti Foundation in collaboration with SF Jazz (a Hewlett grantee) and Grace Cathedral. The work was originally premiered at a series of concerts and events celebrating the building of Grace Cathedral in 1965, including a sermon by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. days after the marches in Selma. The concert was repeated in 1990 for the 25th anniversary with many of the original artists as possible. The 50th anniversary performance will feature contemporary artists, and may be filmed for further dissemination, as was done in 1965.
