Association pour le Développement de la Langue Saafi (ADLAS)

For Support Of Mother Tongue Reading And Math Instruction In Senegal With Transitional Support

Overview
Many students who attend school in Senegal never learn to read, in part because instruction in public schools is delivered in French, a language that the students do not understand, and in part because instructional methods for teaching reading in Senegal are ineffective. The Senegalese organization ADLAS has developed a successful model to teach reading and mathematics to speakers of Saafi and to support children in transitioning their skills from Saafi into French. This grant would help ADLAS expand its current work to provide reading instruction to around 5,000 additional children and their parents. If successful, the model would demonstrate to the government and others that instruction in national languages is an effective way to teach children how to read—despite the challenging conditions that characterize most schools in West Africa.
