Overview
The San Francisco Bay Restoration Authority (Oakland, CA) works to raise and allocate funds for the restoration and protection of wetlands adjacent to the San Francisco Bay. The organization was formed by the State of California in 2008 as a result of analysis demonstrating that 36,000 acres of Bay wetlands could be restored if public funding were available. The authority provides the mechanism for collecting and managing restoration funds. The estimated total cost of restoring these acres is $1.4 billion over 50 years. To date, $370 million has been invested from federal, state and private sources. The goal of this project grant is for the Restoration Authority to complete a feasibility assessment and plan for raising public funds from cities and counties in the Bay Area. The resulting plan will help the Authority know where to pursue local sales tax or other funding measures to add critical local matching funds to the wetland restoration efforts.
