Grants to this Grantee
for general operating support
The National Coalition of Human Rights Defenders (Defenders Coalition) in Kenya works to strengthen the capacity of human rights defenders to work effectively and to reduce their vulnerability to the risk of persecution by advocating for a favorable legal and policy environment in Kenya. Defenders Coalition has joined End Femicide KE, a national social movement that consists of over 1,000 organizations, social movements, as well as individual feminists and human rights defenders nationally in all their diversity. They work collectively to strongly condemn the alarming rise in femicide cases plaguing Kenya but also call for increased action on prevention, mitigation, and support for survivors of gender-based violence. End Femicide KE is the only movement in Kenya that supports survivors of gender-based abuse in advocating for systemic and structural change — for free. Defenders Coalition will strengthen movement resilience, expand movement-building efforts around the prevention of femicide, violence against women and girls, gender-based violence, intimate partner violence and abuse, and multiply their reach to support the healing of survivors of femicide and gender-based violence, especially in marginalized rural and low-income high-density urban area communities. for general operating support
The National Coalition of Human Rights Defenders in Kenya works to strengthen the capacity of Human Rights Defenders (HRDs) to work effectively and to reduce their vulnerability to the risk of persecution by advocating for a favorable legal and policy environment in Kenya. The coalition’s focus areas are informed by the need to address the intersecting issues and power that perpetuate violations of the rights of HRDs. It thus centers its work around these critical pathways: advocacy toward conducive operating environment; appropriate and rapid responses to the protection needs of HRDs; as well as offering capacity development, knowledge-management support, and movement building.
