Overview
Z Space is a San Francisco hub for artists and audiences to revel in the creation, development, and production of new work, and is renowned for its artistic innovation and risk-taking. The theater commissions, develops, presents, and produces a full season of new works from a variety of disciplines including theater, dance, music, performance art, and new media. Recently expanded to include Z Below, an additional small theater space onsite, Z Space plans to produce and present up to sixteen new works in its two theaters, reaching more than 20,000 audience members. Z Space is also home to several presenters, including Word for Word, Litquake, and Golden Thread Productions (a Hewlett Foundation grantee). With continued support, Z Space, supported by the creation of a New Work initiative, intends to ride the tide of its recent growth, looking at venue usage, technical preparedness, and artistic planning processes, while building the capacities of a newly invigorated and engaged board.

Grants to this Grantee
for general operating support
Z Space is dedicated to creating, developing, and presenting new performances, often in collaboration with artists, ensembles, and organizations. Z Space presents and coproduces works of theater, dance, and storytelling. It also promotes youth self-expression and literacy through arts education programs that bring works of fiction to the stage verbatim. In a typical year, Z Space provides dozens of diverse ensembles and organizations with subsidized access to its two San Francisco theater spaces and serves more than 20,000 people. This grant to Z Space advances the Performing Arts Program’s Communities strategy.
