United States Capitol Historical Society

The United States Capitol Historical Society is a congressionally chartered nonprofit charged with telling the story of the Capitol, the Congress, and the people who work therein in a manner that inspires informed patriotism. The work of the society focuses on strengthening our democratic values and bringing people together across party lines to create a better understanding of the way our system can provide the American people an enduring way to govern themselves: of the people, by the people, for the people.

The United States Capitol Historical Society, founded in 1962, is chartered by Congress to educate the public on the history and heritage of the U.S. Capitol, its institutions, and the people who have served therein. It continually creates new ways to bring the story of the Capitol, Congress, government institutions, and our national history to people around the world through engagement with Congress, educational events, scholarly research and symposia, publications, special programming for students, and collaborations with other nonprofits working to strengthen the capacity of Congress.

Chartered by Congress in 1962, the United States Capitol Historical Society (USCHS) was founded and is now led by former members of Congress. USCHS studies, interprets, and educates Congress and the public on the history, art, architecture, and heritage of the Capitol building and the United States Congress through scholarship, educational programs, annual recognition awards, public activities, and collaboration with the Architect of the Capitol, Senate and House historical offices, other congressional entities and other nonprofits such as the White House Historical Association, the Supreme Court Historical Society, and the U.S. Association of Former Members of Congress. This grant will support UCSHS’ ongoing efforts, including an upcoming conference in association with an exhibit on the history of U.S. separation of powers by the Architect of the Capitol in the U.S. Capitol Visitor Center.
