For Global Pulse’s Work To Strengthen An Ecosystem Necessary To Harness Big Data For Development

Overview
Global Pulse, an initiative of the United Nations Secretary General, accelerates discovery, development, and scaled adoption of big data innovation for sustainable development and humanitarian action. This grant supports Global Pulse’s work to strengthen the ecosystem necessary to achieve this mission. This includes (a) lowering barriers to scale, by supporting the development of frameworks and standards to address data access and privacy challenges; (b) strengthening the innovation ecosystem, by connecting communities of practice across disciplines and geographies to build trust and accelerate the pace of innovation; and (c) enabling institutional adoption, by providing public sector organizations with policy guidance and technical assistance to strengthen their capacity for implementing big data innovations.

UN Global Pulse is a United Nations innovation initiative working to discover and mainstream applications of big data and artificial intelligence (AI) for sustainable development, humanitarian action, and peace. This grant supports Global Pulse’s program on Data Privacy & Protection, AI Ethics, and Digital Cooperation. The goal is to support the global advancement and regional scaling of ethical and human rights-based approaches in order to design and use AI and big data to address the impact of the COVID-19 crisis with an emphasis on African economies. This grant is part of a cluster of grants under the Evidence-Informed Policymaking strategy to advance policy frameworks that help governments in East and West Africa strike a balance between public good uses of data and data privacy and protection.
for 2030 agenda for sustainable development and climate change  
This grant will support the Office of the Special Adviser on the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and Climate Change to provide leadership to the UN system to implement the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The Office of the Special Adviser will carry out activities that include producing public commentary and analysis on the SDGs, developing official directives from the Secretary General, establishing UN-wide strategies for SDG implementation, and coordinating necessary changes within the UN system to respond to the new SDGs. The Office of the Special Adviser will work with UN agencies, member states, and civil society to carry out these activities.

This supplemental grant will support Global Pulse’s ongoing work to develop frameworks and standards to address data access and privacy challenges, connect communities of practice across disciplines and geographies to build trust, and provide public sector organizations with policy guidance and technical assistance. In addition, this grant will allow Global Pulse to undertake a strategic review and respond to new political and technological opportunities.
