As a San Francisco based theater growing out of the LGBT’s Stonewall generation, Theatre Rhinoceros began addressing the tragic issues of a Bay Area community hardest hit by the AIDS crisis in the 1980s. Subsequently, Theatre Rhinoceros has grown into what is now the longest-running LGBT theater in the United States. Producing three plays annually, Rhino reaches approximately 1,500 audience members, presenting works that speak to queer issues, foster self-acceptance, and bridge community understanding. With continued support, Rhino intends to address the dearth of plays that address African American queer and lesbian life, producing two additional plays per season to provide opportunities for underserved playwrights and actors.
