Overview
Theatre Rhinoceros is the longest-running LGBTQ theater in the United States and strives to represent the diversity of LGBTQ communities. For more than 5,000 audience members each year, Theatre Rhinoceros presents works that highlight the resilience, defiance, and wit of LGBTQ artists and communities in the face of historic and current marginalization. The organization presents a season of six fully staged plays, including an outdoor production at the Yerba Buena Gardens, along with staged readings and pop-up performances.

Theatre Rhinoceros produces LGBTQ+ stories that encourage and empower artists and audience members to fight for a more just and equitable world. In a typical year, the organization presents a season of fully staged plays, staged readings, and hybrid live and online performances for about 1,300 audience members at their 700-square-foot-studio theater in San Francisco’s Castro neighborhood. This grant advances the Performing Arts Program’s Communities strategy.
