Texas Tribune

The Texas Tribune is an established leader in nonprofit digital news media as an independent organization devoted to providing the news and information people need to be full participants in their community and in our democracy. The mission of the Tribune is to inform its readers — and engage with them — about public policy, politics, government, and statewide issues. As with all Hewlett media grants, the foundation takes a hands-off approach and exercises no editorial control.

Launched in 2009, the Texas Tribune is widely considered the nation’s most successful all-digital nonprofit news site providing state-wide coverage. Now with more than 600,000 monthly unique visitors, the Tribune’s work focuses on Texas public policy, politics, and government. Currently all reporting capacity is located in-state. In light of recent declines in D.C.-bureau reporting capacity, this grant would allow the Texas Tribune to hire its first political reporter in Washington, dedicated to improving coverage of Texas’s congressional delegation–one of the largest in the country, with 36 members in the U.S. House. If successful, this could prove an important model for enhancing local coverage of congressional delegations in other states.

The Tribune now has more than 1 million monthly unique visitors at texastribune.org and hundreds of thousands of readers, listeners, and viewers of other news media via free syndication, including a partnership with The Washington Post. The Tribune’s coverage focuses on Texas public policy, politics, and government. This grant renews support of the Tribune’s political reporting from Washington, D.C., substantially improving access to information on Texas’ congressional delegation — one of the largest in the country.
