Overview
A fiscally sponsored project of the Seventh Generation Fund for Indigenous Peoples, Bay Area American Indian Two-Spirits supports the development and presentation of artistic and cultural activities for Two-Spirit people, their friends, and their families. Through these activities, the organization aims to recover the role of Two-Spirit people within the American Indian community, often referred to as LGBTQ+ people in American society. Bay Area American Indian Two-Spirits originated the first and largest yearly Two-Spirit Powwow in the world. Over 5,000 artists, community members, and audience members attend the powwow, which features dancers, musicians, singers, crafters, and other culture bearers. This project grant, which advances the Performing Arts Program’s Artists strategy, will support the commissioning of art projects that will honor and innovate upon traditional Native American artistic practices.
