Overview
President Obama's effort to promote global nuclear disarmament has both energized and concerned countries in the NATO alliance. The approximately 200 U.S. nuclear weapons stationed in Europe have now become a divisive topic of debate in the current NATO Strategic Concept Review. A grant to the Royal United Services Institute would support workshops, parliamentary delegation visits, and opinion pieces aimed to educate key European policymakers and the European public about compromises that could balance the need for NATO alliance cohesion and security with global efforts for nuclear disarmament. If successful, this and other complementary grants would help guide this review and ones thereafter through an educated decisionmaking process that fairly weighs the costs and benefits inherent in various policy choices.
