Overview
Playground is Berkeley based organization, incubating new plays and supporting young playwrights through all phases of script development and production. Playground commissions new work, provides script writing workshops, and hosts readings and peer learning experiences. Noted for an annual festival featuring plays from their extensive cohort of playwrights, Playground also hosts, "Monday Night at the Playground", a popular quarterly set of public readings developed quickly over a week’s time around common a theme. This Organizational Effectiveness award will support Playground through a facilities planning project, allowing for the organization to effectively navigate the complex landscape of possibilities, from leasing presenting space to the acquisition of property.

The organization serves audiences through free performances at its theater in San Francisco and streaming online, all of which contributes to the Performing Arts Program’s Communities strategy.

PlayGround is an incubator for the development of new local voices in theater. Through a suite of programs, PlayGround provides opportunities that cultivate the careers of early-career playwrights and develop new productions. In addition, PlayGround manages the Potrero Stage, a 99-seat black box theater in San Francisco’s Potrero Hill neighborhood and a flexible rehearsal, meeting, and classroom space in South Berkeley. Each year, the organization serves 8,000 audience members and more than 250 directors, actors, playwrights, and designers.
