Overview
PlayGround is an incubator for the development of new local voices for the theater, providing unique opportunities for the cultivation and development of early-career local playwrights, and partnerships with leading professional directors, actors, and theaters. Through the development of original short and full-length plays, PlayGround supports emerging playwrights’ experimentation and risk-taking, while helping them hone their individual style and technique. Popular for its high-energy Monday Night PlayGround, a staged short play reading series from October through March at Berkeley Rep, PlayGround has also recently become a resident company at Potrero Stage in San Francisco. A renewal grant will support PlayGround’s annual commissioning program, and the production of full-length plays.

It commissions the creation new theater works, provides performance opportunities for performers and playwrights, incubates new theater productions and organizations, and serves as a fiscal sponsor. The organization serves audiences through free performances at its theater in San Francisco and streaming online, all of which contributes to the Performing Arts Program’s Communities strategy.

PlayGround is an incubator for the development of new local voices in theater. Through a suite of programs, PlayGround provides opportunities that cultivate the careers of early-career playwrights and develop new productions. In addition, PlayGround manages the Potrero Stage, a 99-seat black box theater in San Francisco’s Potrero Hill neighborhood and a flexible rehearsal, meeting, and classroom space in South Berkeley. Each year, the organization serves 8,000 audience members and more than 250 directors, actors, playwrights, and designers.
