Grants to this Grantee
for a program to promote equitable tax policies in Ghana
Oxfam America works closely with local civil society organizations around the world to promote transparency of government revenues and spending and to increase public participation in decisions about how public resources are allocated and spent. Tackling inequality is one of Oxfam’s primary pillars of work and the impact of COVID-19 has elevated this issue to the top of the global development policy agenda. One of Oxfam’s approaches to addressing inequality is through taxation. With this grant, Oxfam will implement a project in Ghana to increase domestic revenues by focusing on property, wealth, and corporate taxation. Oxfam will work with two district governments to use innovative technology to facilitate property valuation and tax collection. Oxfam will also design and deploy the Ghana Responsible Tax Index, which ranks companies annually based on their level of tax compliance and disclosure of tax payment information. The information generated from the district pilots and the index will support Oxfam’s advocacy efforts to increase property taxation and corporate tax compliance. (Strategy: Transparency, Participation, and Accountability)
for support to Oxfam West Africa's project enhancing women's participation in extractives governance
This grant to Oxfam America aims to ensure that women and other marginalized groups are able to participate and have equal voice in decision making about how extractive industry revenues are reported, managed, and used. Working through the Oxfam West Africa Regional Platform, this grant will support efforts to identify barriers and pathways to gender equity in extractive industry governance, and build the capacity of women’s rights organizations and civil society groups to implement more gender-aware extractive industry oversight and governance. (Strategy: Transparency, Participation, and Accountability.)
for a program to support citizen engagement in extractive industries and budget processes in Senegal
Oxfam America works closely with local civil society organizations to promote transparency of government revenues and spending and to increase public participation in decisions about how public resources are allocated and spent. In the last two years, Oxfam provided detailed information on the legal and fiduciary obligations of extractive companies to citizens in three regions of Senegal and facilitated citizen monitoring of company activities in those regions. This grant will enable Oxfam to consolidate the work in the three regions, expand to two more regions, and build the capacity of citizens in the target communities to participate in decisions about the allocation and use of extractive revenues.
