Overview
Opera San José is the only opera company in the United States with a resident company of eight principal artists who are given year-long salaried contracts that include housing and medical benefits, to perform leading roles for the seasons’ four main-stage productions of classical opera and new works. Reaching annual audiences of more than 30,000 people, the company has valuable opportunities to perform its core repertory, to learn new work under the pressures of a demanding schedule, and to develop its performance skills across a diverse repertory. Opera San José has educational opportunities for adults and an opera education program for the public schools that includes assemblies, residencies, and attendance at dress rehearsals. Renewed support would come at a critical juncture in the Opera’s history, with a major executive leadership transition providing the organization an opportunity to update its programmatic and operational approach to meet the evolving needs of local audiences.
