Overview
The Open Markets Institute is a team of journalists, researchers, lawyers, economists, and advocates working together to expose and reverse the hold that corporate monopolies have over the American economy and democracy. With deep expertise in how monopoly power distorts outcomes in major markets, ranging from the technology sector to agriculture to pharmaceuticals to transportation, Open Markets combines policy, legal, and market structure expertise with sophisticated communications and outreach efforts. The institute seeks not only to hold today’s monopolies accountable for abuse of power, but to build an economic system where progress is easier to achieve, because power is far more widely and equitably distributed.

Credited by the Financial Times as "driving the debate" and "posing an intellectual challenge to the antitrust consensus," the Open Markets Institute seeks to accelerate the development of the intellectual architecture necessary to address the grave economic and social challenges deriving from extreme levels of corporate concentration. Over the past 40 years, a radical ideological reversal has exposed consumers and suppliers to noncompetitive pricing, closed markets for new entrants, and dangerously concentrated economic and political power. Neoliberalism embraced this reversal, which Open Markets has led in challenging. This grant supports the production of books, articles, and papers, along with aggressive stakeholder engagement, to establish a new anti-monopoly consensus.
