Overview
A cornerstone of the Salinas community and destination for John Steinbeck enthusiasts, the National Steinbeck Center uses the author’s experiences, creativity, and inspiration to reach 140,000 people each year. Under new leadership appointed in 2009, the Center has taken a central role in vitalizing the local community. A first-time grant would support performing arts programs at the Center’s 37,000-square-foot museum and at the Steinbeck Institute of Arts and Culture (Sherwood Hall, formerly under the city’s management). The Center began operating the Institute, the only performing arts center in eastern Monterey County, in 2010 when budget cuts forced the City of Salinas to end its management.

Grants to this Grantee
for cultural programs
Located in John Steinbeck’s birthplace of Salinas, the National Steinbeck Center produces exhibits and cultural programs inspired by the author’s life and works. Following numerous efforts to revitalize the 37,000-square-foot museum and cultural center, the organization sold its namesake building to California State University, Monterey Bay in September 2015. The sale relieves the Center of significant long-term debt and enables it to remain a tenant in the building with greatly reduced exhibition and programming space. This grant will help the organization develop a suite of programs that are reflective of the Center’s new model and more focused on Steinbeck’s literary legacy.
