Overview
Margie Jenkins founded her dance company in 1973 in San Francisco and is one of the city’s, and the country’s, most legendary choreographers. Supported by the Hewlett Foundation since 1983, The Margaret Jenkins Dance Company (MJDC) creates and presents new dances in the U.S. and abroad and, as Ms. Jenkins has become one of the field’s most respected elders, it has grown into a leading space for dance research and mentorship. With renewed support MJDC will offer home seasons at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, and develop site specific pieces in the three story atrium of the Jewish Community Center of San Francisco and at the Barbro Osher Sculpture Garden at the de Young Museum. These works, which involve the participation of dancers from China and Japan will be presented abroad and tour extensively throughout the United States as well. MJDC will also continue the Leaders at The Lab series of public conversations between national leaders in the dance field and continue to expand the acclaimed Choreographers in Mentorship Exchange (CHIME) program. CHIME pairs master choreographers (including Hewlett supported dancers Alonzo King, Joe Goode and Joanna Haigood) with emerging choreographers to raise the quality of dance and to foster collaboration and communication among the great dance artists of today and tomorrow.

Grants to this Grantee
for the 2020 50 Arts Commissions for dance and movement-based performance
In recognition of the Hewlett Foundation’s 50th anniversary, the Hewlett 50 Arts Commissions initiative supports the creation and premiere of 50 exceptional works of performing arts. This grant will support the Margaret Jenkins Dance Company in developing and presenting "Global Moves" by choreographer Margaret Jenkins. In the face of waves of national/international isolationism and xenophobia, "Global Moves" will be a collaborative dance event of hope and unity that draws on the combined creativity of choreographers from the United States, India, Israel, and China.
