Overview
The Maine People’s Resource Center (MPRC) was formed in 1984, with the goal of teaching everyday people the skills to participate in the decision-making processes that affect their daily lives. Widely recognized for its effectiveness in engaging Mainers in organizing for social change, many of whom have never been involved in community issues or the political process, MPRC has a large grassroots base due to the close working relationship they maintain with Maine People’s Alliance, whose membership of more than 32,000 households from over 170 towns covers each county of the state. Over the past three decades, MPRC has worked to build a powerful statewide grassroots movement for progressive social change through training, education, and mobilization. The center has been a leader in state campaigns for universal home care, expanded health care access, toxics use reduction, affordable housing, clean elections reform, racial justice, immigrant rights, tax fairness, LGBT equality, and civic engagement, among other issues.
