Overview
Founded in 2009, the Investigative News Network (INN) supports nonprofit news organizations to produce and distribute stories with impact; to achieve cost efficiencies by pooling resources and services; and to develop new revenue streams that will help members enhance sustainability. Following the introduction of the Internet, the business models of many traditional, for-profit journalism outlets deteriorated substantially. An estimated 170 online, nonprofit journalism outlets have quickly developed to help fill the resulting gap in quality news coverage. More than 70 percent of these organizations have been formed since 2009, and many are struggling both to stay afloat and to maximize impact. This grant would support INN and its almost 100 member organizations to improve their work, while exploring the potential to enhance coverage of Congress, money in politics, and other issues of democratic relevance.
