Institute for Multi-Stakeholder Initiative Integrity

For General Operating Support

Overview
The Institute for Multi-Stakeholder Initiative Integrity (MSI Integrity) develops research tools and conducts evaluations to examine the impact of voluntary efforts that have been formed to tackle issues such as corruption in the oil sector. Many such initiatives involve businesses, governments, nongovernmental organizations, and communities as they contend with governance gaps that are not adequately addressed by domestic or international legal or regulatory regimes. MSI Integrity’s findings would strengthen both ongoing and future initiatives by determining whether, when, and how these efforts are most effective.

The Institute for Multi-Stakeholder Initiative Integrity (MSI Integrity) conducts research on the governance and impact of voluntary initiatives that bring together government, civil society, and the private sector to address complex governance and development problems. MSI Integrity aims to strengthen existing multi-stakeholder initiatives by investigating and documenting whether, when, and how these efforts are effective. In the last two years, MSI-Integrity successfully completed and published a report on the governance and effectiveness of multi-stakeholder initiatives, concluding that MSIs are not fit for purpose, especially in relation to their human rights record. The results are being used by several MSIs, including those funded by the Hewlett Foundation, to inform adaptations to the structural limitations identified in the report. MSI Integrity plans to focus on the private sector to advance and promote corporate models that put workers and communities at the center of corporations’ ownership and governance.
