Overview
Although the reasons why women do not consistently use contraception when they want to avoid pregnancy are complex, difficulties in access are a significant factor for many. Some of these access problems would be alleviated if birth control pills were available over the counter. This grant would provide continuing support to the Oral Contraceptives Over-the-Counter Working Group, a coalition of reproductive health organizations and individuals, led by Ibis Reproductive Health. Although the Working Group’s goal of over-the-counter status for pills is ambitious, the Group has slowly but steadily raised awareness about its proposal and stimulated attention from policymakers through publication of research about the proposal in professional journals and general media.

Grants to this Grantee
for general operating support
This supplemental grant is for Ibis’ expanded programmatic work to meet the recent challenges in the reproductive health, rights, and justice landscape in the United States. In order to help Ibis meet the moment, U.S. Reproductive Equity is providing this additional funding. Ibis Reproductive Health improves women’s reproductive autonomy, choices, and health by conducting research and pursuing principled partnerships in the United States, Latin America, and sub-Saharan Africa to inform advocacy for access to safe, affordable, high-quality reproductive health care. Ibis works to increase access to high-quality abortion services, transform access to abortion and contraception through technology and service innovations, and expand comprehensive sexual and reproductive health information and services. This grant is aligned with both the Global and U.S. Reproductive Equity strategies.
