Overview
The Headlands Center for the Arts (Headlands) is a 27 year-old multi-discplinary residency program located 15 minutes north of the Golden Gate bridge on Golden Gate National Recreation Area property in Marin County. Supported by the Hewlett Foundation since 2004 the organization provides studio space in an idyllic location and time for emerging and established artists to develop new works of performing, literary and visual art. In the last year Pulitzer prize winning local author Michael Chabon has been a resident as has the 2008 Macarthur Genius award winning sound-artist Walter Kitundu. Physically housed in former military barracks on a decommissioned army base, Headlands has significant ongoing capital costs and while it continues to gain support from the region’s leading institutional funders – including recent grants from the Irvine, San Francisco and Gerbode Foundations – the organization acknowledges that it’s operating business model needs review and updating. With an organizational effectiveness grant the current acting Executive Director, Sharon Maidenburg, will work with two highly regarded Bay Area consultants (Amy Kweskin and David Gluck) on a five month planning process that will consist of:
1) analyzing of Headland’s business model and financial systems,
2) assessing the organization’s capital needs
3) conducting an environmental/competitive scan
4) completing a 3-5 year strategic plan including a prioritized list of agreed upon priorities tied to benchmarks and linked to trackable measurements of impact and progress
