Overview
Gritty City Youth Repertory Theatre is a rigorous, pre-professional training program in Oakland, serving East Bay youth of color. Enrollment is by audition, and the program only admits between 15 and 18 young people (ages 14 to 24) per year. Gritty City provides a high-quality theater training program for youth who otherwise do not have access to arts programming in their schools. Each year, the company produces a season consisting of two full-length plays that combine contemporary takes on classical works with original plays. Gritty City’s youth perform annually for 1,300 audience members, many of whom are first-time theater-goers.
