for the 2022 50 Arts Commissions for Media Arts
In recognition of the Hewlett Foundation’s 50th anniversary, the Hewlett 50 Arts Commissions initiative supports the creation and premiere of 50 exceptional works of performing arts. This grant will support Gray Area Foundation for the Arts in developing and presenting lead artist Skawennati’s “They Sustain Us.” The project will culminate in a hybrid performance and installation of live actors and online avatars to personify the story of the “Three Sisters” crops — corn, beans, and squash — cultivated widely by Native American peoples.
