Global Citizen Year Incorporated

For A Program To Allow Low-income Bay Area Youths To Participate In Experiential Learning Abroad

Overview
Global Citizen Year enables young Americans to work as apprentices in Asia, Africa, and Latin America during the critical "bridge year" between high school and college, offering them the opportunity to hone skills required for success in a globalized world and to build a greater interest in development issues. The program requires youths to share their experiences widely, creating a ripple effect among their communities at home. This grant would support full scholarships for low-income youths from the Bay Area to participate in the program. It will also help Global Citizen Year explore how best to mobilize much larger sources of funding so that this program-and others like it-can eventually be provided free of charge to low-income students from across the country. The grant is expected to serve several of the Foundation's goals by promoting deeper learning for low-income Bay Area youths and encouraging Americans to support better development policies for the world's poor.
