This grant to the Georgia Tech Foundation will support Georgia Tech's domestic and international research and convenings to address challenges facing the current mutual legal assistance treaty (MLAT) regime, the treaty regime by which countries request investigative assistance from one another. Improving the functioning of the MLAT process will help provide governments that currently lack access to electronic evidence, and therefore have a strong incentive to consider data localization and other policies that would have negative impacts on the cybersecurity and an open Internet.
