Overview
Started in 1996 by a law student at Stanford University, the mission of Fresh Lifelines for Youth (FLY) is to "prevent juvenile crime and incarceration through legal education, leadership training, and one-on-one mentoring." FLY works with youth ages 15-18 who are "in the juvenile justice system or at-risk of formal system’s entry to inspire them to change the trajectory of their lives, build their assets and skills, and ultimately reduce their delinquent behavior." Programs include legal education, leadership training, and one-on-one mentoring. Over 90 percent of participating middle school students report that "because of what they heard they are less likely to break the law." This grant will support the expansion of FLY’s existing work, including efforts to build a more sustainable leadership structure.
