Overview
Michael Gerson and Peter Wehner served as aides to President George W. Bush and subsequently authored City of Man: Religion and Politics in a New Era. This project grant to the Ethics and Public Policy Center will enable them to engage with leaders of Evangelical Christians in the United States to explore ways in which the values of civility, persuasion, and pluralism could be invoked by church and para-church leaders to alleviate the problem of political polarization.

The Ethics and Public Policy Center is a nonpartisan research institute dedicated to defending and promoting our nation’s founding principles — respect for the inherent dignity of the human person, individual freedom and responsibility, justice, the rule of law, and limited government.This grant will support research and writing by Senior Fellow Peter Wehner in his efforts to help repair America’s civic public life, to improve our political culture and governing institutions, and to remind people of the dignity of politics and the central role principled compromise plays in it.

This grant renewal will assist Ethics and Public Policy Center and its senior fellow, Peter Wehner, in their efforts to remind Americans of the value of politics and how to think concretely about how to improve it. Through television appearances, columns, essays, and a forthcoming book, The Death of Politics, Mr. Wehner will argue that restoring America’s noble political tradition can get us back to the task of making America a more perfect union. If citizens demand more of our politicians by demanding more of themselves, our politics and country will improve.
