Overview
Founded in 1988 and led by music conductor Michael Morgan since 1990, the Oakland East Bay Symphony (OEBS) performs an eight concerts season as the 3,000-seat Paramount Theater in downtown Oakland. The orchestra performs for 18,000 paying patrons each year, 35,000 attendees of free concerts, and 23,000 students. OEBS performs a mix of contemporary American music, premieres and traditional orchestra works and distinguishes itself among its regional symphony peers by cultivating a strikingly diverse audience, 35% of whom are people of color. For his commitment to making the orchestra’s work accessible and engaging for East Bay communities, and for his development of the OEBS education program, Maestro Morgan was awarded the 2006 Community Leadership Award by the San Francisco Foundation. Renewed, and increased support for OEBS will enable this financially sound organization to further diversify its funding base, and deepen its music education programs in Oakland Unified and Livermore Valley Unified school districts.

Each year it presents concerts at Oakland’s historic Paramount Theatre, free community events, and in-school education program that serve more than 5,000 youth at 25 schools in the Oakland Unified School District. Support for East Bay Performing Arts aligns with the Performing Arts Program’s Communities strategy.

East Bay Performing Arts, operating as the Oakland Symphony, is celebrated for its varied programming that speaks to the diverse population of Oakland. Each year it presents six concerts at the historic Paramount Theatre, a free Independence Day concert, and comprehensive education programs for 50,000 people, including 19,000 youth. Its adult chorus and youth orchestra engage more than 200 community members, and its Music for Excellence program reaches students at 20 schools in the Oakland Unified School District. This grant advances the Performing Arts Program's Communities strategy by the Oakland Symphony to transition its leadership following the untimely death of its long-time conductor and music director.
