Overview
The Conservation Society of California manages and operates the Oakland Zoo. Comprised of several distinct "regions," the Oakland Zoo houses more than 700 native and exotic animals, many of which are rescues, in naturalistic habitats. The Oakland Zoo hosts tens of thousands of visitors each year and is known for pioneering animal husbandry methodologies. Zoo-based education efforts in conservation are extensive, and the zoo has developed zoological programs that help re-populate critically endangered species back into the wild.
