Overview
Proposed by historian Maribel Morey, this grant supports a two-day workshop to take place at Stanford’s Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences during the 2018-19 academic year. Bringing together scholars and philanthropy practitioners, the workshop will focus on two questions: (a) Was the conservative movement really, as the Hewlett Foundation’s President Larry Kramer suggests, the "single most successful example of effective philanthropy," at least in "the realm of advocacy and policy-oriented philanthropy?" and (b) Can other examples of effective philanthropy, such as those rooted in the genesis of welfare states and interwar internationalist initiatives, inspire alternative models and means for new intellectual paradigms in political economy? The workshop’s principal purpose is to guide philanthropy’s use of historical models in political economy programs.
