Overview
In recognition of the Hewlett Foundation’s 50th anniversary, the Hewlett 50 Arts Commissions initiative supports the creation and premiere of 50 exceptional works of performing arts. This grant will support Chaksam-pa in developing and presenting the “Celebration of the Great Shoton Festival of Tibet,” a Tibetan opera with performances by artist Tsering Wangmo and other Tibetan opera practitioners. This will be the first-ever presentation of the Shoton Festival in the United States, and the project’s contemporary interpretations of traditional operas will celebrate and help preserve the traditional culture of Tibet and other Himalayan cultures.
