Overview
The Accountability Initiative works to improve service delivery in India by developing innovative models for tracking government programs, disseminating this information to policymakers and citizens, and researching how to strengthen accountability between citizens and their government. This grant will allow the Initiative to track government funding by state rather than by sector. It also will deepen the work to understand how teachers and district staff can better monitor schools and respond to citizen demands.

Grants to this Grantee
for strengthening the transparency and accountability of public expenditures on education in India
Although the Indian government spends more than $10 billion annually to deliver primary education to its citizens, these resources are not producing good learning outcomes. By studying the ways in which education resources are allocated and managed, the Accountability Initiative at the Centre for Policy Research has helped unearth clues as to why these investments are not yielding results. This grant would enable the Center to continue tracking education expenditure management at the district and school level, to generate an evidence-based debate on the need for reform, and to experiment with ways of building greater school-level accountability through local school management committees.
