Overview
The Biodiversity Funders Group (BFG) aims to support and grow a community of biodiversity grantmakers that pursues complementary and collaborative strategies, in part by sharing knowledge and strategies, building partnerships, and identifying needs and emerging issues. Collaboration across philanthropy is especially important in light of the global biodiversity crisis, exacerbated by climate change; scientists warn more than one million species could go extinct, many within decades, if humans do not change the way we use and conserve our natural resources. The Hewlett Foundation is a member of BFG. (Substrategy: Funder Collaboratives)

The Consultative Group on Biological Diversity seeks to conserve and restore biological diversity by helping foundations work together. Its goals are to (1) create strategic partnerships among funders to address threats to biological diversity, (2) increase the strategic impact of grantmaking by connecting member foundations, (3) identify emerging issues around biological diversity conservation, and (4) promote the effective use of monitoring and evaluation activities. This grant would support the Hewlett Foundation’s membership in the Group for two years.

The Consultative Group on Biological Diversity is made up of fifty-eight member foundations. The group seeks to conserve and restore biological diversity by helping foundations work together. It emphasizes efficient learning and collaboration so that member foundations can more wisely and effectively use resources to achieve their biological diversity goals. Its goals are: (1) to create strategic partnerships among funders to address threats to biological diversity, (2) to increase the strategic impact of grantmaking by connecting member foundations together, (3) to identify emerging issues around biological diversity conservation, and (4) to promote the effective use of monitoring and evaluation activities. Hewlett Foundation staff regularly participates in Consultative Group on Biological Diversity issue briefings and relies on the Group's staff for access to experts and coordination with other funders. This grant would support the Hewlett Foundation's membership in the Consultative Group for two years.
