Overview
Berkeley Symphony Orchestra is a regional symphony that commissions, premieres, and presents new symphonic works, and provides arts education programming for young people in Berkeley. Its composer-in-residence and commissioning programs nurture and develop new talent in the field. Each year, the organization’s free and ticketed concerts reach 5,500 people and its arts education programs bring instrumental music instruction to 4,650 students in Berkeley public schools, at no cost to the students or schools. This grant to Berkeley Symphony Orchestra aligns with the Performing Arts Program’s Continuity and Engagement strategy through the Traditional Works component.

Grants to this Grantee
for general operating support
Each year, Berkeley Symphony Orchestra performs a four-concert series at Zellerbach Hall on the U.C. Berkeley campus, highlighting contemporary and less familiar traditional symphonic literature and reaching an audience of almost 6,500 people. With its first new music director in thirty years at the helm and a recently appointed executive director, the orchestra continues to provide innovative programming to the local community, as well as its Music in the Schools program to every Berkeley public elementary school student. Renewed support would enable this financially stable and artistically sound organization to continue to deliver quality orchestral music.
