Overview
Bates College aims to strengthen faculty capacity to reform undergraduate STEM education to be more collaborative, participatory, and accessible. With this grant, Bates College will establish the Institute for Racially Just, Inclusive, and Open STEM Education (RIOS). The RIOS Institute will emphasize racial and social justice in curricula, pedagogy, and scientific practice within higher education. Through professional learning communities, the RIOS Institute will promote open educational resources and practices, open science, and open data to prioritize the needs of learners, instructors, and scientists who have been excluded from the benefits of traditional educational and research systems. The Institute for a Racially Just, Inclusive, and Open STEM Education (RIOS), supported by Bates College, reimagines STEM education grounded in the principles of open education, open science, racial justice, equity, and inclusivity. RIOS offers leadership development, collaborative innovation spaces, and community building to advance social justice for an open STEM education. By targeting leaders of institutions, organizations, and projects, RIOS aims to drive change throughout multiple institutions, thus more rapidly transforming education systems. for supporting more equitable and sustainable open education in undergraduate biology
Bates College aims to strengthen and build faculty capacity to reform undergraduate STEM education through the QUBES and SCORE networks. QUBES is a community of mathematics and biology educators who share OER and methods for preparing students to use quantitative approaches to tackle real and complex biological challenges. The SCORE network develops solutions related to the technical, social, and financial sustainability of OER. This grant will support the sustainability of the QUBES network, collaborations to develop and research OER for undergraduate biology, and faculty mentoring networks to build capacity and understanding of equity and inclusion.
