Overview
In recognition of the Hewlett Foundation’s 50th anniversary, the Hewlett 50 Arts Commissions initiative supports the creation and premiere of 50 exceptional works of performing arts. This grant will support Art and Soul Oakland, better known as Heart of the Town, in developing and presenting “Blues, Baroque, and Bars: From the Streets to the Symphony,” a suite of music for a cross-genre ensemble of musicians and vocalists. Lead artist and master blues practitioner Faye Carol will create a work that uses the blues to tell the story of Black Americans from the shores of Africa to the plantations of the American South, and through the Great Migration.
