Overview
The Global Fund for Women has been a catalyst in the global women’s rights movement since 1987. By mobilizing nearly $85 million from more than 20,000 individuals and institutions, it has been able to provide grants to 4,200 groups in 171 countries. In 2010 alone, the Global Fund’s efforts reached 125,000 women and girls and benefited thousands more. In recognition of the appointment of the Global Fund for Women’s new CEO, Dr. Musimbi Kanyoro, this unrestricted funding would allow the organization to continue to advance women’s rights by making grants that support and strengthen women’s groups around the world.

Grants to this Grantee
for support of feminist-led abortion rights movements in West and Central Africa
This renewal grant to the Global Fund for Women (GFW) will support the youth-led movement for abortion rights in Benin, Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire, and Guinea. GFW and a regional Movement Committee seek to expand access to safe abortion, especially for marginalized groups, by strengthening interconnections between abortion rights, sexual and reproductive justice, and gender justice activism. During the grant period, the Movement Committee and GFW will deepen participatory grantmaking, capacity strengthening, and collective action with the regional abortion rights ecosystem. In addition, GFW and its partners seek to influence philanthropic practice in feminist, movement-led grantmaking and governance. (Strategy: Global Reproductive Equity)
for support of a collaborative fund to expand medical abortion accompaniment
This grant to the Global Fund for Women will support the Feminist Fund for Abortion Accompaniment in the Global South. Trained abortion accompaniers provide stigma-free information, medication abortion counseling, and individualized support throughout the abortion process, a model that has existed for 20 years in Latin America and has been growing in Africa. The fund aims to build capacity for scaled-up access to self-managed abortion and share best practices and strengthen models for providing high-quality, evidence-based abortion accompaniment in Africa and Latin America. (Strategy: Global Reproductive Equity)
