National Family Planning & Reproductive Health Association

For Pilot Projects To Offer The Copper IUD As Emergency Contraception

Overview
Use of the copper IUD as emergency contraception (EC) is supported by clinical literature, which indicates that it is 10 times as effective as EC pills. However, health centers rarely offer EC-seeking patients a copper IUD. This grant would enable the National Family Planning & Reproductive Health Association to conduct an eighteen-month pilot project wherein five health centers would offer the copper IUD as EC to all EC-seeking patients. These health centers would then present to their peers on the experience at the Association's national conference and through webinars, likely encouraging additional health centers to take up the new practice. The goal of the project is to increase the number of health centers that offer the copper IUD as EC and thus reduce teen and unplanned pregnancy.

The National Family Planning & Reproductive Health Association is the umbrella organization for the network of “safety net” family planning providers in the United States. These providers serve people who have nowhere else to go and who often need free or subsidized health care. The organization works to provide a public policy voice and technical assistance to its members, and uses litigation, analysis, education, and communications to promote policies that expand access to family planning services for the poorest throughout the United States.
