Overview
The Reproductive Freedom Project of the American Civil Liberties Union protects reproductive rights in the United States through litigation, advocacy, and public education. Working with its network of state affiliates throughout the country and other reproductive rights organizations, the Project plans to continue providing legal expertise and resources to combat laws and policies that infringe upon reproductive rights. As more states enact measures to restrict access to abortion and other reproductive health services, the Project will play a central role in efforts to block these onerous restrictions and educate the public about their impact. The Project’s leaders are prominent and respected within the broader pro-choice movement. During the previous grant period, the Project blocked several state laws, demonstrating the importance of litigation as a critical backstop.

Grants to this Grantee
for support of the American Civil Liberties Union’s Reproductive Freedom Project
The Reproductive Freedom Project of the American Civil Liberties Union Foundation (ACLU) works to protect reproductive rights in the United States through a combination of litigation, advocacy, and public education. In light of the Supreme Court ruling in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, the ACLU is qualified to mitigate the resulting damage. This grant will (a) support the project’s continued efforts to litigate against laws that harm or diminish reproductive rights; (b) carry out proactive campaigns such as highlighting the harmful effects of religious refusal laws on both reproductive and other human rights; (c) work in close collaboration with other organizations to ensure that the most important reproductive rights cases have effective legal and advocacy expertise; and (d) work with partners to ensure that those investigated and prosecuted for assisting, receiving, or providing abortion care receive legal representation. (Strategy: U.S. Reproductive Equity)
